Here’s some news that caught my eye:
Dune news! Real Dune news! Sort of.
Jon Spaihts has been hired to write the sequel. The movie we’re getting next year only covers the first half of the first book, so it’s nice to see that the studio has enough early confidence in the film’s success to actually start work on the sequel. There’s no design work or anything, just hiring a relatively expensive screenwriter to churn out a draft, but it’s definitely something.
Literally the only reason I’m looking forward to this movie is the involvement of Jason Reitman. Yes, he’s Ivan’s son, but Jason came out of the gate with Thank You for Smoking, proving himself as a quality director. I’ve seen everything else he’s made except The Front Runner, and they’re all at least good. Tully might be my favorite.
Seeing him in charge of something like this is the only reason to be excited for another regurgitated property.
I have paid little attention to this, but it’s been obvious that this is where we were heading. Hell, remember when Laurence Olivier “appeared” in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow?
Sorry, dead actors, but this is going to become the norm. We’re past Fred Astaire selling vacuum cleaners.
Jeremy Saulnier making new movies is always news for me. He’s probably my favorite director of his generation, and he’s got, probably, a couple of dozen more movies to make in his lifetime.
Trailers that caught my eye:
I’m not sure what to think of this, but word is that it’s good. It looks like it’s going to be a well written and acted film. I’ll check it out.+
Being a Pixar movie, there is a non-zero chance that absolutely none of the footage in that trailer will appear in the movie. It’s kind of their thing. Still, looks interesting. I thought the emotions thing was going to fall flat in Inside Out and that movie ended up wonderful. The soul thing could work here as well. We’ll see.
